I can’t wait to get my wireless network up and running. I have been pining for one ever since the 802.11g standard was released and next month I should have the money to get one started at last. I think the part I’m most looking forward to is having internet access on my pocket pc. The big advantage of this for me is being able to free myself from my study/office and enjoy the internet in the more relaxed environment of my lounge. I find the current situation with having internet access in only the office/study ridiculous. I mean basically you’ve got this huge resource of information but its locked away in the corner of then house much the same way as a library, when really nine time out of ten the information would be more useful when you actually doing something.
For example, I often watch the documentaries on TV and learn a lot form them. However there’s only so much they can cram into a 60min show, so I often find myself wanting to look stuff up about the topic while watching the show. So for quite sometime I have been planning the wireless network of doom, and soon this geek will be in wireless heaven. Basically my sights have been on the Linksys range of products for ages because they are the best you can get in the wireless world as far as I am concerned. Anyway to get me started in a wireless world I’m going to start with a Linksys WAG54G 54Mbps Wireless-G ADSL Gateway, which has just about everything a boy/geek could need in one box, a wireless access point, ADSL modem, 4 port switch, firewall, and a router. I decided on this unit because, well, it’s the best (in my opinion) and allows me to gradually upgrade my network to full wireless without having to shell out loads of cash all in one go.
So after the Gateway is all up and running I then plan to get a wireless SD card for my Pocket PC, then maybe PCI cards for my two desktops if I feel the need, all going well I should have the full kit up and running in about 2-3 months time.
