Letter writing is hard

Today I got down to writing a letter to my CCF child and I quickly remembered why I hadn’t written to him before now. The problem is what exactly do you write about? I mean our worlds are so different, for example in his culture its social suicide to live with your partner before you’re married, and I’ve been living with my girlfriend for over 2 years now. Plus my life revolves around the internet and computers, but I can’t really talk about that in my letter because I would have to go into this huge mission explaining what all that is. Also from their letters I get the impression that they are very religious, which I am not, so I hope I don’t say anything to offend them.

So after about an hour of going over the letters and photos I have received from him and his family, I decided to follow their lead and just talk about the goings on in my world and my family, focusing on things that they could relate to. Even this proved to be difficult but I somehow managed to talk about family, working, New Zealand (I also attached a NZ map) and the recent flooding we have had. So in the end the letter managed to be about two pages long plus two more pages with photos of my family and New Zealand plus captions, a good effort for the first letter if I do say so myself.

Its funny now that I have actually managed to get it sent I’m worried it may never reach its destination, I’m told it’s quite common for the mail to go missing in Kenya, so maybe I should have made a copy of the letter before I sent it, just in case. Oh well I can only hope to hear back from them in a few months time excited to have my letter.
