Microsoft want to change the name of RSS to something other than RSS and of course lots of geeks and nerds tech people are up in arms about it. So why rename RSS anyway? Well because few people know what RSS is and even fewer use it. In fact it would seem that 66% of people don’t know what RSS is and only 11% of people use them (its as low as 2% in the states). So Microsoft’s solution is to rename it to something that actually makes more sense to users. Right now they are kicking around the idea of “Web Feeds” which I personally think is a far more sensible name than RSS, which stands for “Really Simple Syndication” for those of you who don’t know.
What we tech people often forget is in the end everything we do/produce is about/for the non tech people, not us. So if changing a name is what it takes to get people using a very useful technology like RSS Web Feeds, then so be it.
