Art, Ambience, and Alcohol

For some reason during my school days, Art classes and I never really got together. I’m not sure why really; I guess my older brother was always the arty one so I never really got into it. Lately I’ve been drawing a lot more, and I’m surprised to say that I’m actually ok at it.

So in light of this new found talent I’ve decided to buy a graphics tablet because I prefer to use my PC for as many tasks as humanly possible, and a mouse just doesn’t cut it. I might also invest in a copy of Alias SketchBook Pro, the same software used over at Penny Arcade, but I think Ill play with the free demo version first and see how I like it.

If only I could afford a tablet pc so I could be freed from my office, have internet access anywhere in my house, and be able to draw on my computer as if I were drawing on paper. Maybe I should start saving for one, Yeah why not!

To add to my newish found love for art I’m enrolling in a life drawing class which starts once my cooking classes end, which works out well. Theres also a course on drawing cartoons which I might go to as well if I can find the time, and convince my girlfriend to come.

Speaking of my Girlfriend, lately we have both been on a mission to find a cool place to hang out in Palmerston North; our place if you will. Both of us have lived in Wellington for a time so weve had a taste of the cool relaxed culture that only Wellington has, and so we are looking for a similar culture here. So far our hunt has found only what we already knew, with the likes of Cafe Cuba, Barista, and this cool as Asian place whose name I can’t remember or pronounce, Oh and tonight we did have a meal at this nice little kebab place on the square whose name has once again has left me. While these places are cool, they are still nothing compared to Cuba Street in welly on a good day.

Funnily enough once place that is surprisingly nice to be, is the City Library. As sad as it sounds its a great place to go and hang out. In fact I like it so much that Ive decided to make it my mission to draw there at least once a week and watch the world go by. I’m a people watcher from way back (not in a peeking though your windows kind of way) and the library is always full of people, with this sort of calm quiet purpose about them, which I found very relaxing. I can see why they call the Palmerston North Library The living room of the city.

On a side note, lately I’ve felt a distinct lack of other couples around. It’s quite odd really but I kind of wanna do couple things with other couples. Unfortunately for me after university all my couple friends moved away to Wellington, Auckland, or just away from each other…sad but true. Might just pop down to Wellington next weekend to see some couple friends, maybe even go out to dinner.

Come to think of it a few weeks ago I was in Wellington at my girlfriends sisters (wouldn’t it be easier if I could have just said sister in law?) birthday party. It was a really good night, and no I’m not just saying that, it was oddly good. When we first arrived at the restaurant we were a little early so our table was still being used. So we had to wait around before we could sit down… hilarity ensued.

Being a BYO restaurant we had bottles of alcohol with us and sure enough someone in our party decided that if we drink a bottle before we are seated they won’t charge us corkage. So before you know it a bottle of bubbly has been popped and we are all drinking straight from the bottle, each of us with a look of I’m being naughty on our faces. Of course we had all been drinking before we got to the restaurant so this extra wine was enough to push the alcohol just a little over the edge. Next thing the remaining bottles of bubbly are having their corks fired across the room bouncing off the ceiling and generally pissing off the staff…
